Welcome to my Costume-a-Show SPOOKtacular! When I said I had more costumes than one gal could need, did you think I meant I could wear 20+ in one month?! Well it's true, and each week I'm going to post all of the costumes, how to make them yourself, where to get what you need, and even how to repurpose some of them to make other costumes!
This week's costumes: Devil, Cat, Supergirl, Jack Skellington, Flapper, and Pirate!
Costume #1: Devil
Cheap and easy! All you really need are horns, and if you want to go all out you can also get a pitchfork, a tail, and/or a cape! They sell these little pieces for the costume at Walmart, Target, Party City, Walgreens, etc. for typically $10 or less! Then, all you'll need is either a black outfit with red accents or an all red outfit!
These pieces are also reusable for other fun costume ideas! For example…
Deviled Egg: You wear a white t-shirt with a big yellow circle (painted or made out of construction paper) on it!
Devil in Disguise: All you need is a pair of Groucho glasses! You can find them at somewhere like Party City for $5 or less!
Devil's Advocate: Just wear a suit! Perfect for an election year because everyone loves to play this role 😉
Tag along with an angel to make the perfect duo!
Costume #2: Cat
Another really cheap, easy, and classic costume! All you need is a pair of cat ears and again if you want to go all out, get a tail and maybe even a choker necklace you can make look like a tag or a bow tie! For the record, I have no clue why the bow tie look works for being a cat, but it does! Make sure you have black eyeliner or body paint so you can draw the purrrfect nose and whiskers! Get creative with your makeup for an even better look!
Other fun ideas using these pieces:
Cool Cat: Just toss on your coolest outfit and a pair of sunglasses!
Cat Nap: Carry around a little throw pillow (you could even tape some 'Z's to the pillow) and pretend to be asleep in every photo!
House Cat: Just wear some PJ's, a robe, and your fave slippers!
Copycat: For all of the cheesy pun-lovers like me, this is a classic! Wear a shirt with “CTRL + C” written on it!
Cat Lady: If you're going with a group, have a few cats and a designated little old lady!
Tag along with someone dressed as a mouse (especially if you have a little one!) or your puppy to make the perfect pair!
Costume #3: Supergirl
This is a store-bought gem (can usually be found for $30-$50) that I got when I was in MIDDLE SCHOOL! I cannot believe it still fits me, lol! If you're dressing up on a budget this year, this costume is still totally doable! Here's what you'll need:
1. Superman T-Shirt: For whatever reason I have one of these lying around, and maybe you do, too! If not, you could get one (~$15 or less) online or try somewhere like Walmart, Target, or Kohl's! If you're artsy, just get a blue t-shirt and some t-shirt paint!
2. Red Skirt: A red a-line or skater skirt would be perfect, but any red skirt will work! You could also get a red tutu from Walmart, Amazon, or Party City! Bonus if you can find a yellow/gold belt or fabric to put around your waist!
3. Red Boots: Most of us don't have these on hand… lol, but you could just wear some knee-high red socks and even better if you have red shoes to go with them!
4. Red Cape: These are usually pretty cheap and easy to find anywhere with costumes!
Dressing up with your boo? The Superman costume is pretty similar 🙂
Costume #4: Jack Skellington (The Nightmare Before Christmas)
This one required a few pieces, but can still be put together without buying a full costume! The only things I used from home were black tights and black pointed heels! Here's where I found the pieces…
-Jack Skellington Suit T-Shirt Dress: Hot Topic, Sale: $25
*You can find other t-shirts and dresses online! Unless you have a pinstripe suit… then all you'll need is his iconic bow tie!
-Jack Skellington Bow Tie Choker Necklace: Walmart, $5
*You can also find the Bow Tie at Party City, Hot Topic and a few places online!
Don't forget to add the lines on your mouth and pose with Christmas decor for the full effect!
You can make this costume a couple or group costume if you all dress as characters from The Nightmare Before Christmas!
Costume #5: Flapper
The picture on the left is a store-bought costume from Walmart and the one on the right is a DIY version I wore to a Gatsby-themed event!
What you need:
Anything with fringe, sparkles, sequins, or jewels! But even if you don't have something like that in your closet, it's still easy! A plain dress or skirt (maybe one that falls straight down like these!) would be fine, just do it up with your accessories! Jeweled and feathered headbands, long beaded necklaces, boas, elbow-length dress gloves, fur shawls… oh and your best 20s-themed hair and makeup!
Next Step: Get the pomade ready and Google, “How to Dress My Boyfriend like Gatsby”
Costume #6: Pirates In 2020 Be Like…
I got this costume at Party City a few years back, but they still carry basic pirate costumes like this one for $20 or less! They have them for boys and girls of all ages and have more intricate styles for $30-$50, as well! You can also get accessories – like parrots, swords, hooks, hats, and eye patches – at stores like Walmart, Party City, and Target! Tall black or brown boots and black fishnet tights are always a good addition, of course!
If you have any of the following items, DIY!!
-White flowy shirt, or one with exaggerated or “puffy” sleeves, a red and white or black striped shirt could also work!
-Black skirt or tight pants, black and red striped skirt or pants, or red pants/skirt!
-Black vest and/or black or red chunky belt would be a nice touch! You could even use a red scarf and tie it around the waist!
-Other little accessories: hoop earrings and a bandanna or scarf around your head!
Oh, and most importantly… BLACK EYELINER!!
Best partner costumes for a Pirate: Sailors or Mermaids!
~~~~~
Remember!! A lot of places that carry costumes, like Walmart and Party City, have really upped their game and offer a lot of singular pieces for costumes like these! If you feel like you have SOME or MOST of the pieces and you're just missing a few things, check these stores to see if they have what you're looking for 🙂
I can't wait to see your faBOOlous costumes this year!! Check back here each week for more costumes and ideas! These are just the first 6 of the 21 I will be wearing on
